John gained his early experience as a Pan Asian business expert advising on market entry while working for a site selection firm in Bangkok. It was there that he met Dennis Meseroll, and discovered the two had a complementary approach to helping clients strategically launch business in Asia. In late 1995, John and Dennis partnered to launch Tractus Asia Ltd., applying to form the foundation of what would become a leading strategic advisory firm specializing in the Asia Pacific region. Since that time, John has played an instrumental role in Tractus’ global growth and evolution. While active in managing key client projects, John focuses today largely on executive management and guiding the next generation of senior managers in ensuring multinational organizations and its leadership are making informed decision in their business expansion.
John applies a strategic and process driven approach to connecting clients with the right opportunities for meeting goals for market entry, expansion or economic development. To date, he has led Tractus in advising on more than USD $8 billion in trade and investment transactions across a wide variety of sectors. This experience has made him a sought after expert to multinational corporations, multilateral, national, and regional economic development organizations from across the globe on trade and investment related issues in Asia. He also has been an angel investor into several early stage technology companies targeting Asian growth markets.
As an accomplished source on economics and business in Asia, John frequently writes articles, presents, and conducts workshops around the world on trade and foreign direct investment trends. He has written for or been interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, CNBC Squawk Box, South China Morning Post, and Site Selection Magazine, among many others. He also was a major contributor to the 2003 Handbook for Setting Up Business in China.
In addition to his leadership at Tractus, John currently sits on several Asian corporate boards. He serves as a Board Member and Trustee of Princeton in Asia, is on the Board of Governors for the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, and is a Board member for the Lutheran Partners for Global Ministry. He served as a Board Member of Princeton’s Institute for International and Regional Studies and was on the advisory board for H.E. Chanthol Sun, the former Cambodian Minister of Commerce.
He studied East Asian History and Economics at Princeton University is fluent in Thai and has basic Mandarin Chinese and Spanish language skills. John is particularly proud of the firm’s CSR activities which are focused on supporting the education of marginalized students in the countries where Tractus operates. He is also proud of his Minnesota heritage where maintains a home and he and his family spend summers. He has a passion for adventure and the challenges of the path less travelled and is an avid cross country cyclist. He credits his one to two week rides, which have covered most of Southeast Asia, as a time for meditation, deep thought and the origin of many of his best client solutions.
